From Newborn to One: A First Birthday Cake Smash in San Antonio

There is something extra special about photographing a baby throughout their entire first year. I first met this sweet little girl for her newborn session, welcomed her back into the studio for her six-month milestone, and now had the privilege of photographing her first birthday session. Watching those tiny newborn features turn into this happy, expressive little personality is one of my favorite parts of being a San Antonio baby photographer.
For her one-year portraits, we created three completely different looks while keeping the session playful, feminine, and full of personality.
We started with a soft pink and white balloon setup accented with greenery and delicate florals. Her dusty rose romper, little floral headband, and oversized wooden number one kept everything sweet and timeless. And that smile! At one year old, sitting still is definitely optional, which is exactly why I love capturing all the little expressions, movements, and personality that come with this age.
Her second setup brought in a beautiful garden-inspired backdrop filled with florals, butterflies, blush pink, and soft green. The sage dress was perfect against all those colors and gave us another completely different look for her birthday gallery.
And of course, we finished with the cake!
Her cake smash session was bright, colorful, and fun with coral, turquoise, pink, white, and gold balloons. Whether babies delicately investigate their cake or dive right in, cake smash portraits are always one of the most entertaining ways to celebrate turning one.
Getting to photograph this little girl as a newborn, at six months, and now at one year has been such a beautiful reminder of just how quickly that first year passes.

A Sweet First Birthday Cake Smash Session in San Antonio

There is something extra special about celebrating that very first birthday! This little guy came into the studio for his one-year milestone and cake smash session, and his personality absolutely stole the show.
We started with simple milestone portraits on a clean white backdrop. Keeping this portion of the session minimal puts all the attention exactly where it belongs—on baby! His adorable blue outfit, bare feet, big brown eyes, and endless expressions made these some of my favorite images from his gallery. Using a few different little chairs also gave us plenty of variety while keeping the portraits classic and timeless.
Then it was time to have a little fun!
For his first themed setup, we headed into the Hundred Acre Wood with a Winnie the Pooh-inspired backdrop, complete with colorful honey pots, woodland details, and plenty of “HUNNY.” His light blue outfit was perfect against all of the warm, earthy colors—and that huge smile made the setup even sweeter.
We finished his San Antonio first birthday session with a whimsical hot air balloon cake smash. Soft blue skies, fluffy clouds, stars, glowing ONE letters, and a simple white cake created such a fun backdrop for celebrating this huge milestone. Once he discovered the frosting, we got some of the happiest expressions of the entire session!
First birthday photography is about so much more than getting the perfect cake smash photo. At one year old, babies have developed such distinct little personalities, expressions, and mannerisms. These sessions preserve all of those tiny details that change incredibly quickly as they head into toddlerhood.

A Sweet First Birthday Celebration | San Antonio Cake Smash Photographer

There’s something so special about celebrating a baby’s first birthday. One whole year of growing, learning, changing, and developing that little personality everyone has fallen in love with. As a San Antonio cake smash photographer, getting to document this milestone is always such a joy!

This sweet first birthday session was full of color, personality, and some seriously adorable smiles. We started with a fun Baby Shark-inspired birthday setup filled with pink, purple, and blue balloons and under-the-sea details. At one year old, babies are constantly on the move, and I love photographing all of it—the sitting, standing, tiny steps, curious expressions, and those big genuine smiles.

We also kept part of the session simple with a soft balloon setup and a classic rocking horse. I love including a more timeless backdrop alongside a themed first birthday set. While themes are so much fun and help tell the story of what your little one loved at this age, the simpler portraits are often the ones that parents find themselves loving just as much years later.

And of course, we had to finish with a bath! Instead of a traditional plain milk bath, we added strawberries and greenery for the cutest little strawberry-inspired setup. Birthday bath photos are such a fun way to end a first birthday session, especially after all the excitement of photographing a busy one-year-old.

First birthdays deserve to be documented. Your baby will never be this tiny again, and their personality changes so quickly during this season. These photographs become a way to remember exactly who they were right at the beginning of toddlerhood.

Why the 6 Month Milestone Is Worth Documenting

The first year of a baby’s life is full of huge changes, but there is something extra special about the 6 month milestone. It’s that perfect halfway point between the tiny newborn days and the excitement of a first birthday — and it deserves to be remembered.

Around six months, babies are really beginning to show off their personalities. The smiles are bigger, the expressions are endless, and many babies are starting to sit independently or with just a little support. Add in those sweet baby rolls, tiny toes, and curious looks, and it makes this stage one of my favorites to photograph.

For this little guy’s 6 month milestone photography session, we were able to create several completely different looks while still keeping the focus on him. From a soft dinosaur setup to an adorable farm-inspired backdrop and a dreamy blue moon and stars set, every setup captured a different piece of his growing personality.

That variety is one of the things I love about milestone sessions. Your baby changes so quickly during the first year, and these portraits give you a chance to freeze exactly who they are right now.

Parents often plan newborn portraits and then jump straight to the first birthday cake smash, but so much happens in between! Six months is often when babies still have all that wonderful baby softness while also becoming much more interactive with the camera.

And those big, genuine smiles? They are pretty hard to beat.

Out of This World First Birthday | San Antonio Cake Smash Photographer

Turning one is such a fun milestone to celebrate, and this little guy made his first birthday session extra adorable! His studio session included both simple milestone portraits and an outer space themed cake smash, giving his family a gallery filled with plenty of variety.

We started with a timeless white wood backdrop and a few simple props so all of the attention could stay on him. He wore the cutest sage green shirt with suspenders, a bow tie, and dark shorts, and he gave us so many sweet expressions. At this age, I love letting babies sit, stand, clap, explore, and show off all of those new skills they have worked so hard to learn during their first year.

For his birthday setup, we went with an out-of-this-world space theme filled with shades of blue, gold, and white. The balloon backdrop included stars, planets, a crescent moon, and an astronaut, along with a big illuminated “ONE” to celebrate the occasion. It was playful and colorful without taking the focus away from the birthday boy.

We also incorporated several little props throughout the session, including chairs, a rocking horse, and a ride-on toy. These are perfect for one-year-olds because they give busy little hands something to explore while creating natural smiles and expressions.

And of course, we finished with his birthday cake! His blue ombré cake coordinated perfectly with the space theme and gave us another sweet way to document this special milestone.

First birthdays happen so quickly. One minute you are bringing home a tiny newborn, and suddenly they are standing, laughing, clapping, and showing off their own little personality. A first birthday photography session is such a fun way to freeze that season before it changes again.

Three Generations | Heirloom Family Photography in San Antonio

There is something incredibly meaningful about having multiple generations of a family together in one set of photographs.

This beautiful studio family session brought together grandparents, their daughter, son-in-law, and their sweet baby girl for a collection of portraits celebrating three generations of family. Sessions like this are such a good reminder that family photography is about so much more than getting everyone together for one group photo. It is about documenting all of the smaller relationships within the family, too.

Throughout their session, we created a variety of portraits, including the entire extended family together, grandparents as a couple, mom and dad with their baby girl, and special portraits of mom with her little one. Their baby was absolutely adorable and gave us so many happy expressions throughout the session.

We also used two different studio setups to give their gallery plenty of variety. The first featured a bright, warm garden-inspired scene with soft yellow florals, greenery, and blue doors. It gave the images a relaxed, cheerful feel that worked beautifully for their more casual outfits. For their second look, we used a romantic floral backdrop with softer tones and more formal styling, creating a timeless heirloom feel.

One of the things I love most about extended family photography is knowing how valuable these images will become over time. Children grow quickly, parents become grandparents, and families move through different seasons before we even realize how much has changed.

A Fun 3rd Birthday Photoshoot in San Antonio

This sweet 3rd birthday photoshoot in San Antonio was such a fun one to capture. This little guy and his family are regulars of mine, and I always love having them back in the studio. His parents have trusted me with so many special milestones over the years, starting with maternity photos, then 6-month portraits, his cake smash session, annual family photos, and now his third birthday portraits.

Getting to watch families grow year after year is one of my favorite parts of being a San Antonio child photographer. I have photographed this sweet boy through so many stages, and he is always such a joy. He is fun, smiley, easygoing, and just the happiest little guy. Some children need a little extra time to warm up, but he has always been so chill and sweet in front of the camera. His personality really shines in his photos.

For his birthday session, his family chose a fun superhero-inspired theme with city lights, bold colors, and playful details. It was perfect for a 3-year-old boy and gave the session such a fun, energetic feel. We also included simple milestone portraits with a birthday number, which is always a great way to document their exact age in a clean and timeless way.

There is something incredibly meaningful about photographing a baby as a newborn and then welcoming her back to the studio one year later for her first birthday portraits. Watching my tiny newborn clients grow into confident, smiley one-year-olds is one of the best parts of being a San Antonio first birthday photographer.

For this sweet girl’s milestone session, we planned three completely different looks to give her family a gallery full of variety.

We started with a chic Breakfast at Tiffany’s inspired setup. Beginning with a clean and polished look allows us to capture timeless portraits before little hands and outfits get messy. She looked absolutely adorable and gave us so many bright, expressive smiles. These classic portraits are perfect for wall art and albums.

Next, we moved into a football themed backdrop for her regular milestone portraits. Being in Texas, football is always a fun and meaningful option for families. She sat proudly, showed off her growing personality, and gave us that perfect mix of sweet and playful. Milestone sessions at one year are such a beautiful stage because babies are sitting confidently, interacting, and full of expression.

Finally, we saved the best part for last. Her Donut Grow Up cake smash was full of joy, curiosity, and frosting covered fingers. Saving the cake smash for the end keeps the session stress free and allows babies to fully explore without worrying about clean outfits afterward. She loved every second and gave us the cutest reactions.

Milo’s 1st Birthday Milestone portraits- San Antonio Milestone photographer

First Birthday Photos in San Antonio | Cowboy-Themed Milestone Session

There is something incredibly special about photographing a baby’s first birthday—and this session was even more meaningful because it marked the end of an entire year of memories.

This was my fifth photoshoot with sweet baby Milo, and it has been such an honor to document his whole first year. We started with his newborn session, then captured him again at 3 months, 6 months, 9 months, and now—his one year milestone. His family chose a milestone package designed to preserve every stage of that first year, and seeing it all come full circle is truly the best part of my job.

For his one-year session, Milo got to show off his very first pair of cowboy boots, his adorable cowboy hat, and of course—his huge, joyful smile. Watching how much he’s grown since his newborn session made this shoot especially emotional and fun.

First birthday sessions are some of my favorites because they capture such a meaningful transition. Babies are no longer tiny newborns, but they’re not quite toddlers yet either. This stage is full of curiosity, proud smiles, and new personality—and Milo brought all of that to his session.

We wrapped up his photoshoot with a milk bath, complete with bubbles and playful rubber duckies. These moments always bring out the most genuine expressions, and Milo had the best time splashing and laughing as we celebrated the end of his first year.

Collin’s 1st Birthday Portraits

San Antonio Milestone Photographer | Collin’s First Birthday Portraits

What a joy it is to have so many families here in San Antonio choose me as their family and cake smash photographer. I’m truly overjoyed every time a family invites me to document their baby’s first year — it’s such an honor to be part of these milestones.

Sweet Collin was last in my studio almost a year ago for his newborn photoshoot, and now he’s back for his first birthday portraits! (Technically, his newborn session was about 11 months ago — his mom scheduled early so she could have plenty of time to order prints for his birthday celebration.)

Watching him grow from a tiny newborn to an energetic, happy one-year-old was such a full-circle moment. He was full of smiles and personality during his session, and it’s always incredible to see how much babies change in such a short time.
