San Antonio First Birthday Photographer | Donut Grow Up Cake Smash and Themed Milestone Session

There is something incredibly meaningful about photographing a baby as a newborn and then welcoming her back to the studio one year later for her first birthday portraits. Watching my tiny newborn clients grow into confident, smiley one-year-olds is one of the best parts of being a San Antonio first birthday photographer.

For this sweet girl’s milestone session, we planned three completely different looks to give her family a gallery full of variety.

We started with a chic Breakfast at Tiffany’s inspired setup. Beginning with a clean and polished look allows us to capture timeless portraits before little hands and outfits get messy. She looked absolutely adorable and gave us so many bright, expressive smiles. These classic portraits are perfect for wall art and albums.

Next, we moved into a football themed backdrop for her regular milestone portraits. Being in Texas, football is always a fun and meaningful option for families. She sat proudly, showed off her growing personality, and gave us that perfect mix of sweet and playful. Milestone sessions at one year are such a beautiful stage because babies are sitting confidently, interacting, and full of expression.

Finally, we saved the best part for last. Her Donut Grow Up cake smash was full of joy, curiosity, and frosting covered fingers. Saving the cake smash for the end keeps the session stress free and allows babies to fully explore without worrying about clean outfits afterward. She loved every second and gave us the cutest reactions.

First Birthday Photos in San Antonio | Cowboy-Themed Milestone Session

There is something incredibly special about photographing a baby’s first birthday—and this session was even more meaningful because it marked the end of an entire year of memories.

This was my fifth photoshoot with sweet baby Milo, and it has been such an honor to document his whole first year. We started with his newborn session, then captured him again at 3 months, 6 months, 9 months, and now—his one year milestone. His family chose a milestone package designed to preserve every stage of that first year, and seeing it all come full circle is truly the best part of my job.

For his one-year session, Milo got to show off his very first pair of cowboy boots, his adorable cowboy hat, and of course—his huge, joyful smile. Watching how much he’s grown since his newborn session made this shoot especially emotional and fun.

First birthday sessions are some of my favorites because they capture such a meaningful transition. Babies are no longer tiny newborns, but they’re not quite toddlers yet either. This stage is full of curiosity, proud smiles, and new personality—and Milo brought all of that to his session.

We wrapped up his photoshoot with a milk bath, complete with bubbles and playful rubber duckies. These moments always bring out the most genuine expressions, and Milo had the best time splashing and laughing as we celebrated the end of his first year.

Sweet Collin was last in my studio almost a year ago for his newborn photoshoot, and now he’s back for his first birthday portraits! (Technically, his newborn session was about 11 months ago — his mom scheduled early so she could have plenty of time to order prints for his birthday celebration.)

Watching him grow from a tiny newborn to an energetic, happy one-year-old was such a full-circle moment. He was full of smiles and personality during his session, and it’s always incredible to see how much babies change in such a short time.

This was my first time photographing sweet Mr. Grayson, and wow—what a fun baby to work with! From the moment he arrived, he was full of smiles, giggles, and those irresistible scrunched-up noses that melt your heart. We started with classic milestone portraits before finishing with the main event: his cake smash session!

Grayson came in with one mission—to destroy that cake—and he absolutely accomplished it. His joy was contagious, and every photo was filled with laughter and personality.

1st Birthday photographer San Antonio

Cake smash photoshoots are always such a joy for me! I get to meet some babies for the very first time and welcome back others I’ve photographed since their newborn days. This adorable little man was visiting my studio for the first time, and he arrived ready to have fun, give the biggest smiles, and completely charm the camera.

For his first look, we went with a football-themed backdrop paired with a cute suspender outfit that matched perfectly. I was so impressed by how confidently he was already walking — many of my birthday babies aren’t quite on their feet yet, but this guy was zipping around without a bit of hesitation!

Next, we switched to a space and stars backdrop for his cake smash portion. He loved the cake — especially the frosting! He had no trouble diving right in, taking big bites, and getting gloriously messy (which is exactly how we like it).

To finish off the session, we moved into the milk bath segment with a “Wild ONE” backdrop. He splashed, giggled, and sent water flying everywhere — pure first birthday magic.

It’s hard to pick which part of his first birthday photoshoot he loved most, because he truly enjoyed every minute. I’m so glad his family brought him in to celebrate such a special milestone. He did amazing, and I can’t wait to see how he grows in the years to come!

Maverick’s Cake Smash

Maverick’s Milestone Session: Big Smiles, Fun Themes, and a Whole Lot of Personality

Maverick was the happiest little guy I photographed this week! His mom chose some awesome themes from my backdrop collection, and the outfits she paired with each setup were spot-on. She truly nailed the coordination — every look felt intentional and adorable.

We kicked things off with a spaceship-themed outfit and my stars and moon backdrop. The combination was out of this world (literally)! Next, we switched to the fishing backdrop, where Maverick rocked the cutest little jean overalls. Finally, we ended with a clean, modern boy setup featuring pins and arrows in shades of gray, light blue, and navy. He kept it comfy in jeans and a t-shirt — a perfect fit for the vibe.

Maverick is already such a cute kid, but it was his smiles that really stole the show. He especially lit up whenever he looked at his mom. I always do my best to get the giggles flowing, but let’s be honest — most babies beam the brightest when they see someone they love.

He was such a joy to photograph that we wrapped up his entire session in under 45 minutes! That’s pretty rare — most milestone sessions take closer to a full hour since we rotate through three different backdrops and multiple outfit changes. But Maverick was totally on a roll, giving us everything we needed in record time.

I am truly honored when a client chooses me to photograph their child/baby more than once. To be trusted initially to use me for a photoshoot but then love the photos and come back once more or even for years gives my heart so much joy 🙂 This sweetie has come for newborn, 6 month & now her one year session and she is such a doll. We started her session with a cute disney Cinderella castle. She had such a pretty cream dress on! Her next backdrop was an adorable butterfly backdrop mixed with balloons and floral. It’s so hard to believe some of these are just backdrops and not a setup designed in person. The backdrops are so realistic. Her last backdrop was for her cake smash. Her mama chose a mix of magenta/purple balloons and sweet baby girl loved her cake! Another succesful photoshoot with smiles and photos for mama to enjoy for years to come 🙂

Miss Ayla has been such a joy to work with over the past year! Not only did I have the pleasure of capturing her cake smash photoshoot, but I also photographed her newborn and 6-month milestone sessions. At every photoshoot, she brought nothing but sweetness, charm, and smiles. Ayla is absolutely adorable!

Each first birthday photoshoot begins with a set of regular portraits against a backdrop of the client’s choice from my extensive collection. Then, we move on to a second backdrop for additional portraits or, if preferred, we can transition into a cake smash session followed by a milk bath. Of course, clients can always skip the cake smash and milk bath, opting to simply celebrate with portraits. The possibilities for first birthday sessions are truly endless!

For Ayla’s session, we started with two beautiful backdrops for her regular portraits, and then moved on to the cake smash. She was hilarious with her cake – she took a taste, then gave us the cutest little cry when she decided she was over it! Such a memorable moment!

Oh my goodness! I can absolutely say that I have the BEST job in the world as a cake smash photographer here in San Antonio! Seriously, what could be better than celebrating the joy and excitement of a little one’s first birthday with a cake smash session? Every session is so unique, and I get to meet the most adorable babies, as well as reconnect with families whose little ones I’ve had the pleasure of photographing before – whether it’s for newborn portraits, 6-month milestone photos, or any other special moments. There’s something so magical about watching these babies grow and being able to capture their sweetest memories, year after year!

The Fun and Laughter of Cake Smash Sessions

One of the best parts of being a cake smash photographer is the endless laughter I get to witness. There’s something so special about seeing these little ones light up when they’re surrounded by colorful frosting and cake – it’s like they can’t believe their eyes! Some babies dive right in, eager to make a mess and devour every bite, while others are more cautious, taking tiny little swipes of frosting with the most serious faces. And let’s be honest – even when they’re not quite sure about the cake, those little skeptical expressions are absolutely adorable!

It’s always a guessing game to see how each baby will react. Some are total cake lovers, digging in with both hands and making a huge mess, while others take a more delicate approach, using just one finger to swipe frosting off the cake. I’ve seen some little ones try to make sense of the cake as if they’re pondering a mystery – it’s all part of the fun and makes each session a one-of-a-kind experience. Every baby has their own unique personality, and it’s such a joy to see that shine through during their cake smash.

The Magic of Family Connections

It’s also so much fun to watch the families who come to celebrate their babies’ big milestone. I get to see parents, grandparents, and siblings all gathered together, cheering the little one on, and even bringing out their best silly voices to try and make their baby giggle. I can’t help but smile when I hear high-pitched voices and silly songs filling the room, as family members try their best to coax that adorable giggle or big smile. Some even start singing nursery songs, hoping to make their little one’s day even more special. The love and joy in the room are absolutely contagious!

It’s also so sweet to witness the bond between parents and their little ones. There’s such a strong connection in the air as parents watch their babies explore the cake for the first time. You can see the pride in their eyes as they see their child hit such an important milestone, and it’s heartwarming to capture those moments for them to cherish forever. After all, these moments only happen once, and being able to preserve them in photos is something truly special.

The Gamble of Cake Reactions

Let’s not forget one of the most unpredictable parts of a cake smash session – the cake itself! Every baby is different, and it’s always a gamble to see whether they’ll absolutely love their cake or find it utterly disgusting. Some babies dive into the cake with full enthusiasm, while others wrinkle their little noses and push the cake away, as if they’re saying, “No thanks!” It’s so fun to capture those first moments of surprise and curiosity – even if the baby isn’t quite sure what to make of the cake.

But what’s even more interesting is how some babies get so focused on the frosting. Even if they don’t want to dig in with both hands, they might just swipe that frosting off with the tip of their finger, one tiny swipe at a time. It’s like they’re savoring each little taste, and I get to photograph those precious moments of discovery. It’s a perfect reminder that no two babies are the same, and no two cake smashes are ever alike – that’s what makes each session so special and memorable.
