From Maternity to Newborn: A Western-Inspired Newborn Session in San Antonio

One of the sweetest parts of being a newborn photographer is getting to welcome families back into the studio after photographing such an important chapter before their baby arrived. I previously had the opportunity to photograph this beautiful couple for their maternity session, so seeing them return—this time with their little one in their arms—made this session especially meaningful.

For their newborn session, they chose a beautiful mix of themes that reflected their style while still giving them plenty of variety throughout their gallery.

We started with an adorable western-inspired newborn setup, complete with warm brown tones, a tiny cowboy hat, boots, and the sweetest little horse. The rich earthy colors paired perfectly with the rustic wood backdrop and created such a timeless cowboy look.

They also selected a completely different celestial setup, featuring deep blue tones, stars, golden moons, and a crescent moon prop. I love when families choose setups that feel completely different from one another because it gives the finished newborn gallery so much visual variety.

For another timeless look, we kept things simple and neutral with soft beige tones, natural textures, and a rustic little newborn bed. These earthy colors keep the focus completely on baby and are photographs that will still feel beautiful years from now.

And, of course, we made sure to document this new season as a family. Mom and Dad each had individual portraits with their baby before coming together for their first family photographs. Their coordinating black outfits kept the portraits clean and classic while allowing their connection with their newest little love to take center stage.

Getting to photograph a family during maternity and then welcome them back for newborn portraits is such a privilege. These sessions aren’t simply about how tiny baby was—they document the moment a family changed forever.

Sweet Baby Blues | San Antonio Newborn Photography

There is something so timeless about a newborn session filled with soft shades of blue. This sweet little one was absolutely precious from beginning to end, and I loved creating a gallery that kept the focus on all of those brand-new details parents never want to forget.

For this session, we used a mix of soft powder blue and deeper navy tones. Keeping the color palette consistent allowed us to create plenty of variety while still giving the finished gallery a beautifully cohesive look. From cozy wrapped poses to tiny outfits and close-up portraits, each setup highlighted something a little different.

And can we talk about that hair? Those perfect little waves deserved their own moment! Add in the tiny fingers, curled-up toes, sleepy expressions, and those wonderfully squishy newborn poses, and there were so many details worth documenting.

One of the things I love most about newborn photography is that the images don’t need elaborate props or complicated setups to feel special. Sometimes a beautiful backdrop, a simple outfit, and baby being exactly as they are is more than enough. These are the photographs that become even more meaningful as the years go by because they preserve just how incredibly little your baby once was.

Newborns change so quickly during those first few weeks. Their features begin changing, they stretch out of that newborn curl, and suddenly those impossibly tiny hands and feet aren’t quite so tiny anymore.
