From Newborn to One: A First Birthday Cake Smash in San Antonio

There is something extra special about photographing a baby throughout their entire first year. I first met this sweet little girl for her newborn session, welcomed her back into the studio for her six-month milestone, and now had the privilege of photographing her first birthday session. Watching those tiny newborn features turn into this happy, expressive little personality is one of my favorite parts of being a San Antonio baby photographer.
For her one-year portraits, we created three completely different looks while keeping the session playful, feminine, and full of personality.
We started with a soft pink and white balloon setup accented with greenery and delicate florals. Her dusty rose romper, little floral headband, and oversized wooden number one kept everything sweet and timeless. And that smile! At one year old, sitting still is definitely optional, which is exactly why I love capturing all the little expressions, movements, and personality that come with this age.
Her second setup brought in a beautiful garden-inspired backdrop filled with florals, butterflies, blush pink, and soft green. The sage dress was perfect against all those colors and gave us another completely different look for her birthday gallery.
And of course, we finished with the cake!
Her cake smash session was bright, colorful, and fun with coral, turquoise, pink, white, and gold balloons. Whether babies delicately investigate their cake or dive right in, cake smash portraits are always one of the most entertaining ways to celebrate turning one.
Getting to photograph this little girl as a newborn, at six months, and now at one year has been such a beautiful reminder of just how quickly that first year passes.

Capturing Milestones: The Joy of Cake Smash Photography in San Antonio

As a San Antonio cake smash photographer, there’s nothing quite like the joy of being part of a family’s milestone moment. Watching parents beam with pride as they celebrate their baby’s first birthday with a fun and memorable cake smash session is one of the highlights of my job. It’s such a joy to help families capture this special moment in a way they’ll cherish forever. There’s something so heartwarming about seeing parents so eager to show off their little ones with a professional photoshoot that commemorates the occasion.

I’ve always loved looking through old family photos, especially the ones of me as a baby and child. It’s a nostalgic feeling, searching through bins of photos to see the moments I don’t remember but will always cherish. Maybe that’s just me, or maybe it’s a universal love for photographs—either way, it’s one of my favorite things about being a photographer. It’s such a gift to capture a moment in time that families can look back on for years to come.

One of the best parts of being a cake smash photographer in San Antonio is experiencing the big personalities of every baby that walks through my studio door. From wide grins and big smiles to sweet, loving glances at their parents, each baby is unique in their own special way. And even on the rare occasion when a baby isn’t too keen on smiling, that’s perfectly okay! Every baby is adorable in their own way, and I always love capturing the genuine moments that showcase their individual charm.
