I’m so glad I had a last-minute opening for this sweet baby girl—just look at her! Isn’t she a doll?

Her mama had done her maternity portraits with me just a few months ago and reached out again, this time in a bit of a whirlwind. She was preparing to move out of town in just two days and asked if I had any availability for a newborn mini session before they left. As fate would have it, I did!

Mom requested a soft pink color palette for her baby girl, and it was absolutely perfect. The delicate tones complimented her skin so beautifully, giving the entire session a calm, dreamy feel.

For those wondering, a mini newborn session is a shorter, more simplified version of a full session. It focuses entirely on baby—no props like beds, buckets, or baskets—just timeless, clean portraits that highlight all the sweet details you never want to forget.

As a San Antonio newborn photographer, I truly feel like I have the best job in the world. I never imagined that capturing the tiniest, sweetest moments of a baby’s first days would bring so much purpose and joy to my life. Every session is a chance to freeze time for new parents — to preserve those squishy cheeks, curled toes, and sleepy smiles that change all too quickly.

When Should You Book Your Newborn Session?

If you’re a parent wondering when to schedule your newborn session, you’re not alone. It’s one of the most common questions I get. Many new parents worry:

“Should I book before the baby arrives?”
“What if my baby comes early or late?”
“Is two weeks too young for photos?”

Here’s what I tell my clients: the best time to pre-book your newborn session is during your second or third trimester. While we won’t set a fixed date until your baby arrives, reserving your spot ensures I’ll have availability when the time comes. Babies tend to be sleepier and more flexible under two weeks old, which makes for those classic snuggly newborn poses. But don’t worry — I’ve photographed newborns at 4, 6, even 8 weeks old and still captured beautiful, timeless images.

What If My Baby Is Older or a Preemie?

I’ve worked with babies born prematurely, sometimes photographing them at 10–12 weeks old — and often they’re still smaller than full-term newborns! Every baby is different, and I always adapt each session to meet your baby’s unique needs, whether they’re fresh from the hospital or already starting to show off their personality.

That newborn “curl” — the ability to curl up like they did in the womb — usually lasts for a couple of weeks after birth. Some babies stay flexible longer, but as they grow and fill out, those cute little bellies can make posing a bit trickier (and honestly, more adorable!).

A Beautiful Newborn Session with Baby Kennedy | San Antonio Newborn Photographer

Miss Kennedy’s newborn session was extra special — she’s the second baby I’ve had the honor of photographing for this sweet family! Her big sister was an absolute star during her own session, so I was excited to meet Kennedy and create something equally beautiful for her growing family.

Every newborn session I offer here at Krystal Garcia Photography in San Antonio is fully customized. From the color palette to the props and florals, I work closely with parents (and sometimes generous grandparents!) to design a gallery that feels personal, timeless, and full of love. In this case, it was Kennedy’s wonderful grandmother who gifted the session — such a thoughtful and meaningful way to celebrate a new baby. These photos will be treasured by the family for generations.

Custom Newborn Session with Florals and Soft Tones

The requested colors for Kennedy’s session were white, purple, coral, and dark pink — a stunning combination for a baby girl. I also incorporated lots of floral elements, which added a soft, whimsical touch to each setup. These hues complimented Kennedy’s skin tone beautifully and gave us a wide variety of looks, from classic to dreamy.

Kennedy was just under 2 weeks old when she came into the studio, which is the perfect window for newborn photography. At this age, babies tend to be extra sleepy and still very curly, which makes it easier to pose them safely and comfortably. She needed a few feeding breaks, as most babies do, but overall she was such a dream to photograph.

Capturing Sweet Moments and Tiny Smiles

One of my favorite parts of Kennedy’s session? That sweet smile I caught mid-shoot! Newborn smiles are rare and quick — you really have to be ready at just the right moment to catch one. When I do, it almost always ends up being one of the parents’ favorite images. Kennedy’s smile melted all of us!

Her big sister also joined us for some sibling and family portraits, and she continues to be so photogenic and fun to work with. It’s a joy watching families grow and getting to be part of their story through photography.

Camila’s newborn session went wonderfully. I’m always thrilled to have every family come in and choose me to photograph their new baby. Most come in so excited and still glowing with joy to show their newborn baby. So many love the idea of capturing time with portraits which of course, i love! Each newborn session gets special planning with color schemes, family portraits (sometimes sibling too). I get to hand select outfits, head pieces and props that go with the colors schemes the parents select. Miss Camilla couldn’t have had a better newborn photoshoot. She slept so great and she did so much! Each newborn photoshoot has up to 3 hours of time scheduled with me , and although most don’t need the full session, It means they did really well. 🙂 Momma wanted lots of floral and lots of girly colors for miss Camilla’s newborn session. I especially loved the floral tucked in baby look 🙂

I had the pleasure of working with this beautiful family for the second time, and just like her big sister, she was an absolute gem during her newborn session. Newborn sessions are some of my longest and most rewarding photo shoots, allowing me the opportunity to spend 2-3 hours with brand new parents and their precious little ones. Every session is unique, and it’s always a pleasure to see how parents approach the experience. Sometimes, I can tell they’re looking to unwind and rest while I focus on their baby. During those moments, I make sure to keep the atmosphere peaceful and quiet, giving them the space to relax — maybe even sneak in a nap!

On the other hand, there are times when parents are eager to watch every moment as I photograph their newborn. These sessions are especially enjoyable, as I get to chat with them and learn more about their stories — whether it’s about their birth experience, how they met, or what they do for work. I had the privilege of working with a couple that truly stood out during one of these sessions. They were incredibly sweet, and hearing their journey was such a heartwarming experience.

But what really made this session stand out was the mom’s infectious, cheerful energy. It was clear how much love they had for their little one, and that positivity was contagious!
